BRAGA & GUIMARÃES FREE WALKING TOURS
Discover Braga and Guimarães (the main historical cities of Minho, a traditional Portuguese region located in the northwest of Portugal) with our free walking tours through the respective historical centers. For about 2.30 hours we will explore the main attractions.

BRAGA

Explore the wonderful city of Braga, located in the historical and cultural province of Minho. Learn more about city history as you walk through its ancient, winding streets and see the most important monuments and sights. Hear the legends and myths and enjoy hearing stories from everyday life in the city! See how the locals enjoy their lives and get a precious local perspective! Celebrated for its historical buildings, monuments, gardens, and wells, Braga is an appealing city in the heart of the green Minho. A region where religious devotion embodied in many churches and other symbols of faith lies juxtaposed with the typical bustle of a modern city replete with restaurants, bars, and famed nightlife, owing to some extent to the local universities.

Braga’s importance as a religious center is by no means a recent phenomenon as pilgrims have been journeying here for many centuries; a matter of fact, it is said that the Visigoths would come here to denounce their heresies. Furthermore, in the 12th century, as the seat of the Portuguese archbishops, it became established as the religious capital of the country. This rich historical and cultural past has been lovingly well kept, even to the extent that local laws prevent the construction of high buildings in certain areas preserving ancient beauty.

Our free walking tour in Braga (First European Destination 2021) takes place every day only by reservation. Just get to our meeting point next to the Arco da Porta Nova at 10.15am or 5 pm and find the guide with our famous green umbrella!

GUIMARÃES

The proud birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first independent king of Portugal (born here in 1110, he later used the city to launch the main thrust of the Reconquista against the Moors), and, thus, the Portuguese kingdom, Guimarães has beautifully preserved its illustrious past. Its medieval center is a warren of labyrinthine lanes and picturesque plazas framed by 14th-century buildings, while on an adjacent hill stands a 1000-year-old castle and the massive palace built by the first Duke of Bragança in the 15th century. Guimarães superbness was recognized in 2001 when UNESCO declared its old center a World Heritage Site. In 2012, the city was the European Capital of Culture, which has given it a more creative edge.

The Guimarães Free Tour takes place only by reservation. Meet us at 11 am and 3.30 pm next to Padrão do Salado. Look for the guide with a green umbrella.
